Why Salary isn’t the only thing you should consider when job hunting

When it comes to looking for a new job, a lot of people focus on salary but there are various other factors you should be considering;
  • Your day-to-day duties
  • Location
  • Career progression
  • Hours
  • Benefits
There is something else though that you should be considering; the size of company. There are many options but each has pros and cons.

 

 

Start-ups

Of all the different type of companies, this can carry the highest risk. A start-up is unproven and hurdles that can be easily overcome by bigger companies might cause the downfall of a new one. Cash flow is a major issue for many newer companies and so every penny counts. This could in turn mean that potential salaries may be lower.
On the positive side, if you join a new company at the right time, you have the opportunity to help shape the company should it be successful. This is a positive that should not be underestimated. You are also more likely to progress as the company grows and there is also the potential for equity in the future.

 

 

Small but established companies

Smaller companies usually mean that each team member can have a bigger impact on the company. This can be either a good or a bad thing. Someone who enhances the company really does so. A bad apple though can quickly affect the whole team. If you don’t personally get-on with someone then it can be hard to get away from them.
Recognition can be easier to achieve in a smaller company as there are fewer people to obscure your achievements. Low staff turnover and a flatter management structure can mean less opportunity for career progression.
In terms of finances, loyalty is often recognised more easily and with more flexibility than large companies. The benefits packages can be more limited though.

 

 

Large companies

Large companies have a proven track record. They are good at what they do and, usually, have been doing it for a while. This can mean sometimes that making changes are difficult and, as we have seen with various companies over recent years, past performance is not necessarily an indicator of future performance.
As a general rule they can offer extensive and generous benefits packages. This can be countered by inflexible salary structures. There is however large potential for career progression, if you can distinguish yourself from the many other employees. If you want to get your head down and have a certain level of stability then this can be a great option.
The company you chose to work for is a very personal matter and personality fit with your immediate team members will be key but hopefully these points will help you to refine your search when you start looking for a new role.
